new blog title

The title of my blog had been bugging me for a while. I'd stuck with the same title for almost 5 years.

So now I've changed it.
I'm not sure I've 'settled' on the new title yet. Both 'outtakes' and 'outer' were titles I'd thought of in different contexts, and I've decided to combine the two.

What do you think?

Update 11/7/09: False alarm! I've changed it back again...

  1. I like outtakes. For me it implies quick glimpses not meant to be included in the grand scheme. Not so sure about outer. Do you want to use a word that means estranged, disconnected, from the outside looking in? I have an image of someone looking through a window, wanting a better glimpse, voyeur perhaps?

  3. Cool, I like it. I will try to remember to update links. This last series of poems are great too, kind of like highwire or balancing acts, just placing the words very precisely and gently either side of the idea. They lead and intrigue the mind.

  4. verbal08: Thanks for dropping by! I guess my poems are generally composed of 'outtakes', which isn't to say all my work is appropriated, although some of it is (in various ways: sampling from other texts, overheard phrases, mis-readings, mis-hearings, chance procedures, manipulations, etc). Sometimes poems derive from outtakes of memory. 'driving hours' is an example of that. As for your question: 'Do you want to use a word that means estranged, disconnected, from the outside looking in?' Yes, I do. That's exactly what I was getting at, although of course the word does have other associations.

David: Good point! Maybe I'll change the title once a week just to confuse everyone (including myself)?

Paul: The title may stick but I'm not sure yet. Glad you like the recent stuff. I've been pretty prolific since I shook off the winter blues and finally had some time on my hands.

  5. Stu,

Don't shoot me, but A Collection of Thoughs is/was absolutely my favourite blog title "of all time". I am too old anyway to change memories now, so, given you sound a bit uncertain about all this anyway, may I have special permission to go on thinking of and linking to your blog by its old name even though it has a new one?

I don't think there'd be any problem, and for that matter, all those people who were annoyed by the old title because it looked like a misprint (of course that double take is the genius of it, you're just stale on it now) would now be pleasantly surprised to find, once they've clicked into your orbit, that your marvelous blog has suddenly acquired a "normal abnormal" name, which people can feel "comfortable with", like every other blog in the Milky Way.

On the other hand, if you insist... just say.

  6. I personally love how some of the uninitiated visitors to "A Collection of Thoughs" think you can't spell. Because, as your wife, I realise how ironic that is. ;)

I agree with TC. Five years of that witty double take may have grown stale for you, but certainly not for me.

  7. Thanks folks - points duly taken. Another close friend whose opinion I deeply respect was shocked that I had changed it.

I've opted to change it back before the protests boil over. ;)

Seriously though, I've been reminded why I chose the original title in the first place, and how it's very 'me'.

I'll stash 'outtakes' and 'outer' away for future use...
